INITIAL THOUGHTS:
Wow… I’m honestly speechless. I was so worried that it had become overhyped but that was amazing. Now this isn’t a movie that will please everyone. A few people laughed in the theater because it’s a weird film and Nick Cage can be a bit too over the top for some to take seriously, but man I thought he NAILED it. I don’t think you’d get a performance like from any other actor. He really disappeared into the role. I absolutely love how they always kept his face slightly hidden. Oz Perkins seems to truly grasp that concept that the more you show the monster, the less scary they become. The flip side of that is I actually felt like they could’ve used just a touch more creepy imagery only because what I did see I loved. The marketing for this was on another level that I’ve never seen before. I love when media makes you look into the story beyond what is in the actual piece. The secret website reminds me of how they advertised for Blair Witch, making it even more real. I could go on and on. The way they played with the aspect ratio depending on the time was just *chefs kiss*. If you don’t like atmospheric “elevated horror” this might not be for you but I was blown away. 9/10 I’m definitely gonna be thinking about it while I’m trying to sleep. Can’t remember the last time a movie had me feeling like that! I love it.Â
SECOND VIEWING:
Well this is officially my favorite movie of 2024 so far! Even though I had seen it before, the creep factor was still there in spades. It was a ton of fun to see how this audience reacted. Recently, it seems like the crowds I’m getting now have been much more considerate than before, and I’ve actually met a few cool people at a couple shows! (You know who you are 😊) Once again Nicolas Cage was still my favorite part during this viewing. I really thought it might drag if I knew what was coming, but the atmosphere was just as effective. I’m definitely going to be adding it to my top horror movies of all time. Now, this seems to be a polarizing movie based on reviews. Like I said in my initial thoughts I don’t think everyone will like it. However, if you liked It Follows (same lead actress and a similar vibe), Sinister, or Silence of the Lambs, you’ll love this. I’m sticking with my initial 9/10 rating. Go see it! Please like and share this review if you enjoyed, thank you! 🙂
