Run Time: 2hr 20min

I’ll be honest, I have no clue how to review this movie. It is absolutely BONKERS and DISGUSTING, but I loved it. I feel like I just stepped off a carnival ride. Language warning; This movie is a campy thrill ride that serves nothing but cunt. Literally. I could not get enough of the cinematography or the sound design. I was completely engrossed in every scene. I have really been loving the stuff Margaret Qualley has been in recently and it was great seeing her in another leading role. Demi Moore’s performance was incredible, acting like that is why I wish the Oscars took horror movies more seriously. You know who really stole the show? Dennis Quaid. That man is an enigma to me, his role choices are all over the place. Right now he has both Reagan and the Substance in theaters, not to mention I recently watched A Dog’s Purpose for the first time the other day. What a switch to go from the dog movie to this! The makeup and practical effects also deserve all the awards. I can only imagine the hours that were put into the prosthetics. There’s more blood and gore in this movie than Evil Dead. About halfway through I thought to myself “oh this isn’t too bad” BOY WAS I IN FOR IT. I would compare the Substance to movies like the Thing or the Fly. It also reminds me of a game I played recently called Still Wakes the Deep. This movie is absolutely not for the faint of heart but if you love body horror or just any horror you’re gonna love the Substance. I’ll give it an 8.5/10. I’m definitely going to check out Coralie Fargeat’s other movie Revenge, I love her directing style.
