Where to watch: There is both a color and a black and white version available on Netflix. However, there is also a re-release happening at some of the Cinemark, AMC and MJR theaters for the next week. I HIGHLY recommend seeing this one in theaters if you can. The sound design alone makes the ticket price well worth it. This movie deserves a big screen.
Godzilla Minus One is nothing short of a masterpiece, and I won’t soon forget the experience of seeing this in theaters. If I had gotten a chance to see it during the initial release it would’ve been in my top 3 of the year, if not my number one pick. The opening scene sucked me in immediately. It wastes no time establishing exactly what is at stake here, and the type of characters you’ll be following. Sometimes when you watch a movie from a different country especially in a different language, there can be a disconnect depending on how the culture is portrayed and the acting choices for each character. That is absolutely not the case with this movie. There’s something to be said about a Godzilla movie that makes you care more about the characters than Godzilla himself. I adored every single person and how each of them were written with such care and compassion. There is a bit of plot armor happening with the main characters but I did not mind it at all. In fact I appreciated the more optimistic and heartwarming storyline, not everything has to be dark and gritty. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a war movie with a monster twist, it really upped the anti. The fact this movie was made for less than 15 million blows my mind. The action sequences and Godzilla’s deafening roar quite literally took my breath away, along with a booming score and sound design that completely envelopes you. Most of the scenes, including the ones at sea, were filmed in large parking lots with men rocking makeshift “boat” to simulate waves. You’d think that would make it cheesy and unbelievable but it was completely effective. I was lucky enough that the screening I saw included a short behind the scenes video showing exactly how they made each shot work. It’s honestly mind boggling how they pulled it off with a team of roughly 20 CGI, SFX artists, and editors. There’s truly no reason for this movie to look as good as it does. This has to be in my top ten movies of the last decade. Easy 10/10. Go see it if you can!!
