Run time: 2hrs 40mins

Well it’s finally actually here. It feels like they’ve been “premiering” this movie for a year. There is also endless drama and rumors surrounding this film. From Ariana’s, we’ll say, complicated history with a certain cast member, to the backlash Cynthia has received recently. Not to mention an unfortunate Barbie QR code débâcle. Google it. It seems like anything related to Oz tends to be cursed. However, I knew going into this I wanted to leave any controversy at the door and watch the movie for what it is. I’m thrilled to say I was truly blown away. It took zero time for me to be completely enthralled, just as I was when I saw the live performance in Detroit as a preteen. Now, I’m not a theater kid or a super fan, but I really did love the production I saw years ago. I honestly was worried this would end up like every other movie musical, but they truly nailed it. I greatly appreciated that they brought on actual theater trained actors and not just big names. Looking at you Les Misérables. Say what you will about Ariana Grande, I am far from her biggest fan, but she was made to play Glinda. Her ability to transform her voice and mannerisms is almost uncanny. I solely saw Glinda the entire time and not Ariana. That is not an easy feat for such a well known name. She could’ve phoned it in and still would’ve been praised, but she doesn’t let up for a second. Every little toss of her hair and well place gasp felt so purposeful. Yet somehow with all of that, it doesn’t hold a candle to the powerhouse that is Cynthia Erivo. I honestly don’t even feel qualified to comment on her other than to say how wonderful she was. I was caught off guard by how emotional it made me. As mentioned before she’s gotten into some drama over appearing to be a bit self righteous online, but I honestly feel she deserves all her flowers. Clearly everyone involved put so much effort and passion into every detail. As a side note, I definitely did not remember the accessibility and disability message that is woven throughout the plot, but I really appreciated and liked it! The detail of Animals within Oz using adaptable gadgets and aides to complete “activities of daily living” as us social workers say, was pretty thoughtful in my opinion. That being said, it is not a perfect movie. Some of the CGI and color grading leaves a bit to be desired, especially considering the unlimited (heh) budget this movie had. It should’ve been a bit more impressive. The other thing that took me out of the movie a bit was Ethan Slater himself. That was one controversy I couldn’t quite get out of my head while watching him. He really was good! Just an unfortunate history he created. CGI and Slater aside I was completely sold watching Wicked. It’s absolutely something you should catch in theaters. I just hope no one turns your theater into a sing along. Mine luckily did not. I give Wicked a 9/10!
